Can anything good come from there?
Praise God!
More times than not we have heard people ask, can anything
good come from that home, or that place or that person? This question is
constantly used to highlight the inability of something or someone to improve,
hold a position of honour or progress. I don’t know about you but if I heard
someone say these words against me, my heart would sink especially if it came
from someone I look up to. But for God, it didn’t come as a surprise that His
son’s place of origin was not viewed as capable of producing anything great,
let alone the Messiah. This is where we meet Nathanael in John 1: 43 – 51 when
Philip informed him that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah that Moses and the
prophets wrote about. He asked Philip, “Nazareth, can something good come from
there?”
Different accounts in the Bible are generous in displaying
men and women who society deemed as incapable or what we like to say today,
UNQUALIFIED. A common example is King David – he was a shepherd, the last born
in his family, the “forgotten” one but this young “unqualified” boy caught the
attention of God, He was anointed as King over Israel. Joseph is another
example, he didn’t have the credentials to be second in command but not only
did God give him a position of honour, He put him in charge of a foreign
nation. We cannot touch on this topic without mentioning Saul of Tarsus who was
converted to Paul. He had lived the life of a persecutor of Christians while
there were Christians who served God and spread the gospel of Jesus but God
chose this persecutor to charge the world to believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus’
disciples were comprised of fishermen who were held in low regard during that
time and he even called a tax collector who we know were not in anyone’s good
books. We can draw numerous examples from the Bible including Rahab the
prostitute, Mary Magdalene, the adulterous woman, Zaccheaus, Ruth the Moabite,
among others.
Where am I heading with this? Good question. You see, in 1st
Corinthians 1:27 -29 the Bible says,”…But God chose the foolish things of the
world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the
strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things – and the
things that are not to nullify the things that are so that no-one may boast
before him.” This here is a clear indication that God does not look at us as
men look at us. You may have been despised, perhaps no one in your family has
achieved any level of education, perhaps you are a single parent persevering the
jeering of society, perhaps you recently received salvation after a sinful life
of sexual immorality and drug abuse, perhaps you are abled differently, perhaps
your current resources don’t seem enough to fulfill your vision, perhaps your
articulation of words is not up to per with others, perhaps you have the lowest
ranked job in your company – whatever it is, understand that where you are
right now is an opportunity for God to move in your life in a big way. People
will be left surprised because they will not understand how things suddenly
changed. Do not be discouraged by your current circumstance, God alone knows the
plans He has for you, to prosper you, to give you hope and a future therefore
rely on Him alone.
Just recently the whole world witnessed who many deemed and labeled
unfit to be a princess/duchess, marry the prince of England. According to her history,
she was unqualified but today it is a different story. Close your ears to
negativity and listen only to the TRUE voice-the voice of God alone.
What other examples can you draw of men and women in the
Bible and today, who were unfit but God raised them.
God bless you
