Who am I? (Part 1)

Praise God!

Theme verse: Genesis 1: 26-27, "Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

Who am I, really?
This is by far the one question most people fear asking themselves because it actually bring us to the realisation that we don't really know who we are. Who are you minus your job, minus your family, minus your passion? If everything you hold dear was to be stripped from you, who would you say you are?

Today we shall focus on the things that cause us not to adopt our true God-given identity. I will list a few examples here
  • Trying to please other people
  • Fear of people knowing who we really are
  • Fear of revealing your weaknesses
The above are just a few causes that I picked out based on what I have experienced. I will focus on the first one which is, trying to please other people. For a long time I have struggled with pleasing God and not men. Yes, it is hard. Before I gave my life to Christ I thought that if I made people happy, then I would happy. Far from it. I was terribly wrong.

I realized that the more I made others happy, the more I lost myself in that mix. You see, when your life is centred around pleasing people then you base your identity on other people and not on what God has called you to be, This is one of the reasons why we even struggle with knowing God's purpose for us. We cannot give from an empty cup. We give out of the abundance of of our lives. Just imagine today, if you are full of love, then you will give love but you can't do this if you have not taken time out to discover who you really are, your strengths or weaknesses.

When God made man, he said in Genesis 1: 26-27, "Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."  What this means is that, our identity is found in Jesus Christ who is God. If you create something, you give it its identity, you determine its use among so many other things. However, today, we are running away from this TRUTH. We want to hear people lavish us with complements based on what we do for them but when we are all alone, we get stressed because we attach our identity to the people we please.

How then can I start pleasing God and not men?
1. Know who has created you - God created you  John 1: 1- 4
(In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.)

2. Have a relationship with the One who has created you - Revelation 3:20, John 1:12
(Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.)
(Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God)

3. Nurture your relationship with your Creator - John 15:4
(Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.)
