The place I call Goshen

The Place I call Goshen blog

The word Goshen has been coming up in some conversations that I have been having with some of my friends. I remember telling one of my friends that a certain coastal town in Kenya is their Goshen. I later told them that it was because every time he experienced a season of dryness or stagnation, he would visit this town and there God would grant him clarity or a breakthrough. I also recall speaking to another one of my friends who told me she had moved to a different church. She explained to me how she had plugged into that church's discipleship ministry and even how she had started experiencing open doors in her life. I told her that the church she was attending was her Goshen.

If you have read this far into my article you are probably wondered what is this Goshen that I am speaking about. Well let me take you on a small journey through the book of Genesis from chapter 37 to 47. So there is this young man named Joseph who happens to be sold by his brothers as a slave. The merchants who bought him then sold him to Egypt where he is later appointed to serve under one of Pharaoh's top Official. He is however falsely accused and thrown into prison. Later God promotes him to serve directly under Pharaoh. Now Joseph had initially been having dreams that appeared as though his family would one day bow before him - this greatly angered his brothers, hence they sold him. So now there is a famine in the land and Egypt as well as countries like Canaan. Jacob, Joseph's father who is in Canaan sends his sons to Egypt to look for food. Long story short, these brothers later discover that the man in Egypt who had been supplying them with food was their own brother and this brings us to Chapter 45 of Genesis. Joseph tells his brothers in verse 10 that them and their families should go to Egypt and dwell in the land of Goshen. There you have it, now you know where the name Goshen comes from. Goshen became a place of refuge, comfort, consolation, provision and multiplication for Jacob and his family. It is so interesting that even Pharaoh offered to give jobs to the most competent men in Joseph's family. They became Chief Herdsmen over Pharaoh's livestock.

So why am I talking about Goshen and how does it relate to us today? Through God's revelation, I realized that each person has a Goshen. A place where when God positions you there you experience abundance and relief. Recognize that Goshen was the best in the land of Egypt even during a time of famine and that's what struck me. Your Goshen can be in a place where others may have ignored. It can even be in a place that doesn't appear appealing at the onset. Let me bring it closer home. God could be directing you to work in a certain organization or venture into a certain business line that isn't as popular but when you join that organization or start that business, you experience growth and divine provision. For others, Goshen could be a place you go to and receive clarity from God on different issues. I could say that for some, the prayer mountains/centres have become your Goshen because whenever you go there, you experience consolation or gain direction.

Now hear me out, I am not saying we go round looking for our Goshen but what I can say is that, you can ask for God's revelation about it. It is only through the Holy Spirit that this can be revealed so seek God and you will see where He is leading you to.

I believe I may not have fully exhausted on this topic but for now, this is where I will end.
