Guest Article: Rest that endures
Guest post by: Rosemary Muniu
Battle-weary soldiers is a familiar description of God’s children as they press on towards the goal. Life can feel overwhelming, with never-ending lists of things to do, places to go and things to see. Every day we are at war killing sin. Every day we are called to die unto ourselves, pick up our cross and follow Christ. Every day we are called to love God with our whole hearts, soul, strength, and minds. And every day, love our neighbors as we love ourselves. We crave for physical rest, we crave for emotional rest, we crave for rest in our souls.

In Christ, we find the rest that our souls, so long for. God has provided for us the means of grace through his Word, prayer, and fellowship where we can rest, as we commune with him. And God promises to fulfill the desire for rest that is within our souls. Jeremiah 31: 25 “ For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”
We have already been granted the greatest rest of all, we are saved! And as we rest from self-atonement for our sins, we are enrolled in the war to keep believing. Sometimes we get weary because of the prevailing circumstances, especially when they are prolonged. A persistent temptation, an unrelenting illness, an extended wait.
And in all these things, we are sorrowful, yet always rejoicing. Even though there is daily trouble, the Lord’s mercies are new every morning as fresh as the morning sunrise and in these truths, we find rest amid the turmoil. Ours is a rest that endures. When our world is spinning, we can rest joyfully in him.
In the hymn: Rest of the weary, John S.B. Monsell aptly describes our true rest-our Saviour.
Rest of the weary, Joy of the sad
Hope of the dreary, Light of the glad
Home of the stranger, Strength to the end
Refuge from danger, Savior and Friend
Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”.
Battle weary soldiers, ours is an amour strong enough to last the war and we can rest in that truth.
